Individual Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy sessions are meant to help you process your experiences and express your thoughts and feelings in a nonjudgmental and supportive space by an unbiased third party. Starting therapy can be both scary and empowering. There are so many unknowns, and depending on what you’re grappling with and for how long, maybe unknowns are exactly what you’re uncomfortable with, or maybe you’re skeptical that anything could help you. But, the first step to feeling more in control of your life would be a brief, free phone consultation prior to starting therapy. This call will help you learn whether we might be a good fit for you and how we can help. You can reach out to Dr. Serino here to schedule your phone consultation, or you can opt to schedule a virtual intake session here.

Here is a sampling of the therapy modalities we offer:

  • Psychodynamic psychotherapy – this can be considered traditional talk therapy, but not the kind that you see in movies where a patient is laying down on a couch while the therapist is silent, or worse, nodding off! We are engaging, motivating and validating. You and your therapist will embark on a mission to understand you, your experience and how you came to be. Often, time is needed to uncover the real you, not the person you’ve been showing to the world. Inevitably, vulnerability is involved at a rate that you feel comfortable with for considerable change to occur. Together, we can increase your awareness of your style of thinking, relating, and behaving in order to feel more empowered and in control of your life. We will increase your functioning, improve your emotional well-being, and most importantly, you will feel seen and heard by someone with compassion for you and your particular situation.

  • Disorders of anxiety, depression and AD/HD entail problematic ways of thinking and behaving which can negatively affect your mood, motivation and general outlook on yourself, others, and the world. This therapy can increase your awareness of your thoughts, feelings and behaviors with an emphasis on empowering you to feel more in control of how you feel. You will learn practical coping skills for making subtle but impactful changes in the way you go about your daily life. Usually, “homework” is involved – but not the kind you do in school. Generally, our patients are motivated to complete our ‘assignments’ – because they almost always see a direct benefit to completing them.

  • This therapy is designed to help individuals learn practical skills for difficulties they may be having in regulating their emotions, tolerating frustration, navigating interpersonal relationships, and being present-focused. Again, as with any skill you learned in life, you will have to practice what you learn in therapy, usually in the form of “homework” outside of session.

  • KAP has shown great clinical promise to patients suffering from anxiety, depression, and other afflictions. Ketamine works by increasing neuroplasticity in the brain, something that cannot be accomplished as easily or as quickly with traditional therapy or other methods. KAP can help those who feel stuck and may have difficulty breaking out of the same behavioral patterns and thinking styles. KAP can change your perspectives on your current life or your life history, and increase your confidence and compassion for yourself or others.

More often than not, I adopt an integrative therapy approach. This means that we incorporate aspects of these various therapy modalities that we know to be most effective for our patients.

The intake session is 60 minutes, and ongoing psychotherapy sessions are 45 minutes

Session fees range from $275-325*

*I am out of network with all insurance companies. However, you may still receive reimbursement from your insurance company for our sessions. I offer a limited number of reduced fee sessions for those in need. Please contact me for more information.

Neuropsychological Evaluations

Neuropsychological evaluations are helpful for a variety of reasons. They can help you understand your cognitive strengths and weaknesses, clarify a diagnostic presentation, or determine appropriate academic and therapeutic supports. Depending on the scope of the evaluation, the process and assessments utilized can vary. Dr. Serino specializes in AD/HD and learning disorder evaluations. A conversation with Dr. Serino, which can be scheduled here will determine your precise evaluation needs. A brief (15-20 minute) conversation will ultimately clarify whether the evaluation services we offer will address your particular question(s) and at a price point that you feel comfortable with.

Here are the most common concerns we address:

  • This type of evaluation is the most comprehensive in nature. When your child is struggling in school, it could be due to a variety of factors. Perhaps there is an underlying learning disorder, but because they are so bright, they’ve managed to get great grades up until recently. Maybe they read slower than their peers, and school is moving more quickly than ever so they are now overwhelmed and unable to perform up to their potential. Or, perhaps your child has an undiagnosed attention disorder, that was missed by teachers (more often in females) and they are internalizing their struggles, which is causing acting out behaviors, being ostracized by peers, failing grades, and an uptick in anxiety and depression. In addition, when struggling with any mental disorder, various aspects of one’s cognition and academics affected. For example, emotional disorders can affect our memory, reasoning abilities, concentration, organization/planning skills, and our speed with which we can read, write, or solve math problems. As you can see, there is no simple answer for what might be going on for your child. Let us figure it out – this is what we do. This evaluation will reveal your child’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses, whether or not they would benefit from certain academic accommodations or curriculum modifications, treatment interventions, and practical strategies they or you can employ at home.

  • This evaluation offering efficiently assesses for AD/HD. Often times, we see adults who have wondered their whole lives about whether they have AD/HD. Or, perhaps they saw a post or article on social media that resonated with them but were never formally diagnosed. Or conversely, sometimes we see patients who were given meds for AD/HD, but are now having identity crises - are they really AD/HD because they’re not seeing a benefit from their prescribed medication. In this latter case, we can assess your attentional system on and off of your prescribed medication. While this is an efficient (read, less expensive) evaluation, it is by no means less thorough. We will leave no stone unturned in our pursuit of the truth! This process inevitably gives patients the validation they were seeking - and they can work with their therapists to integrate this new diagnostic information into their self-concept.

  • This type of evaluation is for individuals who want to know which mental health diagnoses they have. Since there isn’t (yet!) a blood test to determine whether someone meets criteria for certain disorders, this would be the closest possible alternative. Sometimes, we see patients who have been in therapy for a long time, and are frustrated with either not improving, or not receiving formal diagnoses. Sometimes, a patient is referred from their treating physician (therapists, primary care doctors, and psychiatrists) because the provider cannot perform such an extensive assessment within the scope of their practice, yet they would like a better understanding of the patient’s cognitive, socioemotional functioning and personality. This detailed assessment can give a patient more insight into themselves, and provide more hope for a different path forward. And, the provider can be given more direction on how to efficiently treat their patient. This battery assesses for diagnoses such as depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, OCD, trauma and related disorders, bipolar disorders, psychotic disorders and/or personality disorders.

  • I frequently test individuals who have a sense that they are not going to be able to finish a standardized test in standard time. This could be due to emotional, cognitive, or academic factors. I am very well acquainted with the testing and reporting that is necessary to make a case for testing accommodations. Thus far, everyone I have tested for standardized testing accommodations have been approved! Although I also gained experience into the appeals process from my training days (if it ever came to that).

Depending on what you’re looking for, the evaluation process can be tailored to target your particular concerns and pricing.

The in-person portion of the evaluation can range from 4 - 12 hours depending on the referral question.
